About Us

The College of Social Sciences raises creative pioneers of the era.

Since 1975, the College of Social Sciences of Seoul National University has been the cradle for leaders in Korea. Following the comprehensive education policy stipulated in 1975, the College of Social Sciences (CSS) was founded by integrating departments scattered in the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Commerce, and the Graduate School of Journalism. Our alumni nurtured in the College have ambitiously led the industrialization and democratization of this country as economists, legislators, politicians and journalists to name a few, moreover, have emerged as leading researchers in various fields. We are proud that each and every one of them is facilitating positive changes in many aspects of the society.

The College of Social Sciences focuses on education, research, and community service.

Most of the departments in CSS consistently ranked in the top 30 according to the international QS rankings. We work with the best professors who not only have passion in teaching but also conduct world-class research equipped with a diverse set of perspectives and innovative methodologies. Three thousand undergraduate, masters and ph.D students from eight different departments and thirteen research institutes constitute CSS. Our curriculum not only aims for the achievement of excellence in advanced academic knowledge but also emphasizes the priority of community service in order to raise leaders of next generation with great insight, responsibility and judgment.

The College of Social Sciences aims to be the leader of academia in Asia.

Aspiring to become a stronghold of social sciences in Asia, CSS is strengthening international exchange and achieving an academic excellence on par with that of leading countries worldwide. We encourage students to experience a well-rounded academic community by participating in diverse range of studies, from basic research creating original knowledge to policy and institutional research tackling various social problems eventually to interdisciplinary research.

The College of Social Sciences provide diverse internaionalized programs to nurture students into global leaders.

The College of Social Sciences strives to develop and offer a variety of programs to cultivate students’ abilities to perform their best on the global stage. We conduct global studies which connect regular courseworks on community research and field investigation during vacation, we also operate global volunteering programs linked with community service to truly understand and support developing countries. Furthermore, we encourage students’ active participation in various international exchange programs and academic conferences, including graduate students’ publications and attendances in international conferences.

The College of Social Sciences helps students to develop creativity, flexible thinking, and independent problem-solving skills.

We believe in positive changes come from innovative thinkers armed with sense of responsibility upon community as well as problem-solving skills toward challenges. Within this rapidly changing society from globalization to 4th industrial revolution. CSS continues to develop and offer state-fo-the-art, convergence classes such as behavioral economics, biogeography, software culture, and emotional science. In addition, students get varioys opportunities which they can experience keen academic interaction with the professors and grow into creative, self-led researchers – e.g., “Social Sciences Reserach Grant for Undergraduates”(thesis guidance program), individual team-based education for reading classics, etc.
